BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Smith graduated from the Jesuit University Marquette Dental School in 1970, summa cum laude. In the history of the dental school, whose records go back to 1936, he is the only dentist to have graduated with a straight A record. In addition, Dr. Smith finished the 4 year program in 3 years which was also a first for the school. Consequently, Marquette created an advanced training residency for Dr. Smith in periodontics, endodontics, fixed and removable prosthodontics, and oral surgery for his 4th year of training.
After graduation in 1970, Dr. Smith set-up practice in Adult reconstructive and implant dentistry in Point Loma. In the 1980s he was asked to join the San Diego County Dental Society Peer Review Committee. He served on the committee for 14 years, serving as its chairman for 9 years. In 1992, The American Society of Osseointergration bestowed their highest honor of Diplomate on Dr. Smith as did the International Congress of Oral implantology in 1994.
Beginning in 1970, Dr. Smith began surgically placing and restoring subperiosteal and endosseous implants and has since successfully placed many hundreds of implant supported crowns, bridges and dentures.
Dr. Smith makes dentistry his primary interest, and practices all phases of dentistry (with the exception of orthodontia), conveniently removing the need for his patients to travel to multiple specialists.
He grew up in Point Loma, was an altar boy at St. Augustine's Church, graduated from PointLoma High and was on the dean's honor list at San Fernando Valley State College. While he was growing up, the majority of Dr. Smith's summers were spent as a deckhand on local sports fishing boats out of H and M Landing and on his family'sboats, of the Marlin Club for 52 years and the San Diego Yacht Club for 32 years.
Dr. Smith has been married to his wife Elaine for 50 years, who is a lover of gourmet cooking. They have three children and three grandchildren.
